This radiomuseum is located at the village of Olen, in the Dutch speaking northern part of Belgium. The address of the museum is Gerheiden 59, 2250 Olen. The museum is open on Thursday and Saturday from 01:00 pm to 06:00 pm; on Sunday from 02:00 pm to 06:00 pm. Admission 1,5 € per person. For more details please see: http://www.radiomuseum- olen.be/ Pieter Van Opstal, president and founder of the museum, started as a radio hobbyist and professional electricity teacher, restoring and collecting radios at a time when old radios were some kind of waste. When his attic was completely filled, Pieter moved radios to his garage. From that moment people had the chance to see his collection and the museum was born. The little museum worked like a magnet. Not only radios were attracted but it was also discovered by radio minded people. Soon Pieter got the help of an enthusiastic team of co-workers, mostly retired electronic professionals. Due to the experience and know how of the team they built a strong reputation. People not only came to see the collection but some asked the repair of radios that belonged to there parents or grandparents. Started as a maintenance service for the museum collection the team became a workshop specialized in the repair of antique radios. It won't take long until the attic and the garage were too small for those activities. Pieter had the opportunity to buy two adjacent houses and a large surface of ground in the street where he lives. As the museum grows and grows even these two houses were not large enough for all these activities. The museum itself became an organisation too big for one person. At hat moment "Olens Radiomuseum vzw. " was registered as an organisation. Recently the Olen municipal authorities participate in the care for this industrial heritage. You can become a member of the circle of friends of the museum. The circle of friends counts about 200 members. A few times a year we do some activities, mostly related to radio. Recent activities were visits to other musea, a barbeque, a demonstration on digital radio mondiale, the receiving of the transmissions of the Alexanderson transmitter SAQ from Grimeton, Sweden. Four times a year we publish "De Marconist", a periodical on historical radio. (written in Dutch) We hope to see you soon at the museum. Enjoy looking the pictures. |
