Southern Instruments Ltd.
Camberley, Surrey

Designers and manufacturers of oscillographs, oscilloscopes, transducers and recorders for dynamic engineering measurements.

Founded: 1938
Closed: 1971
Production: 1938 - 1971
History:

Southern Instruments was founded by the 39 year-old Colin Brookes-Smith in 1938. He had previously been employed by Cossor as their instrument department manager. The first premises were in Hardings Lane, Penge, moving to Fernhill, Hawley, Camberley in 1946.

The initial work in the 1930s was mostly for measurements of pressures and displacements in internal comdustion engines. This theme continued when work resumed in 1945. Novel transducer and recording techniques were developed for the observation of both fast transients and repetitive phenomena.

In particular, directly coupled amplifiers were developed and patented to permit oscilloscopes and recorders to observe very low frequencies. The motivation for which may partly have been due to Colin Brookes-Smith's personal interest in psychokinesis and associated phemomena measurement.

Rapid expansion lead to a move to larger premises at Frimley Road Camberley in 1954.

A joint company between Telemechanics and Southern Instruments under the name Telemax-Southern Ltd. was formed in 1962 to undertake the international marketing of a new wide-range frequency meter and synthesizer. After Southern acquired all shares in 1964, this company was renamed J.A.C. Electronics Ltd.

The company was incorporated into Shandon Scientific as Shandon Southern in 1971.

This manufacturer was suggested by Konrad Birkner † 12.08.2014.
