Founded: 1951
History: Aiwa Co., Ltd. was founded as Aiko Denki Sangyo Co., Ltd. in 1951 to manufacture electronic and communications equipment. The company changed its name to Aiwa Co., Ltd. in 1959 and is known throughout the world for high-quality, reasonably priced audio/visual products. Sony Corporation invested in the company and became its major shareholder in 1969. Audio equipment including headphone stereos, radios, cassette-tape recorders and players, CD players, mini-disc players, receivers, amplifiers, speakers and accessories accounted for 83% of fiscal 2000 revenues; visual equipment including video tape recorders, television sets, laser disc players and related accessories, 15% and data communications equipment including personal computers, modems, data recorders, mobile phones and other, 2%.
