Philips Rádió és Villamossági Részvénytársaság Magyar Philips Müvek Rt. |
Founded: | 1926 |

History: |
The company was founded 26th of March 1926 as the first foreign subsidiary of the N.V. Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken in the Netherlands. In 1928 they acquired the majority of Vatea Rádiótechnikai a Villamossági Rt. The two companies merged in 1939 and renamed to Magyar Philips Művek Rt. In 1949 Philips was nationalized. When the borders opened in 1989, Philips entered the retail market in the form of a cooperation between Philips Austria and Skala Coop, founding the retail company PSB Philips Skala Budapest already on the 16th of November that same year.[1] PSB was originally only 49% owned by Philips. In 1990 they acquired all shares and renamed to Philips Kereskedelmi Kft. During the following years, the retail business was sucessively reduced and Phiips began investing in production capacities.[1] The first industrial activity was initiated by Philips Austria already in 1989: cable looms where made by a Videoton factory in Székesfehérvár for the video recorder production in Vienna. A new factory in Szèkesfehèràr was later responsible for the production and development of a VCR TV Combination model.[1] In 1991 Philips assembled tape recorders and printed circuit boards for car radios in a location in Sárbogárd. This production was moved to a new factory in Györ in 1996.[1] At the height of production, almost 3500 people worked in Györ, the factory also producing CD drives for car radios and complete Optical Pickup Units.[1] Another factory soon was added in Szombathley, responsible for monitor production.[1] Also in Székesfehérvár, Philips founded the PACH Philips Assembly Centre Hungary in 1992, for the production of televisions and consumer electronics. This factory closed in 2013.[2] [1] = Diplomarbeit "85 Jahre Philips in Österreich", Mag. Walter Riegler, Wien 2011 |
