Der Firma TEAC entstand 1964 aus einem Joint Venture der beiden Firmen "Tokyo Television Accoustic Company" (gegründet 1953) und der "Tokyo Electro Accoustic Company" (gegründet 1956). Seit 1964 wird TEAC als Name und nicht im Sinne einer Abkürzung verwendet. Weder Firmennamen (TEAC Corporation) noch in anderen Dokumenten wird die ausgeschriebene Langform angewendet.

Auf den europäischen Märkten trat TEAC in den späten 1960er Jahren zunächst als Anbieter von HiFi-Geräten in Erscheinung. Besondere Bekanntheit erlangten die Tonbandmaschinen. Die Produkte sind für Tonbandamateure und semiprofessionelle Anwender; eine Alternative zu den schweizerischen Revox-Bandmaschinen.
