Those of us interested in restoring old battery radios have either to make up some form of battery eliminator or use a string of AA/AAA cells to supply the negative grid bias voltage. For years, I made do with the battery eliminator option since construction is simple and the current required is negligible. Yet, wouldn’t it be nice to use the real thing once in a while since there’s usually space provided inside old radios for such a battery and it simplifies external wiring? Added to that, the original battery design typically adds a nostalgic and decorative flourish to the wireless outfit. For this reason, I decided to embark on a little adventure to try to make a couple of batteries and to make them look as authentic as possible. You can see how they turned out from the pictures below.  Rather than take up a lot of space here to describe the method, you can find out how I made these at How to Make a Grid Bias Battery.

Happy Battery Making!

See the earlier article how to make two kinds and cover to download of the Ever Ready Winner 9. You can use two 4.5V torch batteries to get the original kind of cells and solder the socket "tubes" direct to caps and one edge.

Winner 9 Grid battery authentic internals

I have very many styles of cover available just email me. I'm building a battery resource site, any pre 1960s catalogues appreciated.  I have very many covers / replica designs (maybe over 50) and very many equivalents and specifications ready to upload.

Rayovac, US Eveready/Energiser, Mallory/Duracell, UK Pertrix, UK Siemens, Varta/Pertrix/DEAC, Superpilla, UK Chloride-Exide, Zenith, RCA, Burgess, GEC, Vidor, Pile Wonder and others.

Anyone interested especially in 1887 to 1967 Dry Cells, Radio Lead Acid, button and coin cells is welcome to help.

All Battery Models should of course be created here too. Some of the working replicas I have made are on my Collection Page.
