At Das Projekt BEAST-1 there is a multiband regenerative receiver in which a JFET is used as a drain bend detector and another JFET as a Q-Multiplier. I have improved this receiver by using a BJT emitter follower T2 to control the regeneration by changing the drain voltage of the Q-Multiplier JFET T3. T2 and T3 form in fact a cascode circuit. The reason for this improvement is that a drain load resistor tends to destabilize the regen control which can introduce hysteresis (backlash). The source potmeter P3 is used to preset a smooth and backlash-free regeneration control. Set the main tuning capacitor to the highest capacity. Put the regen controlpotmeter P1 to the position that the drain of T3 has the maximum voltage. Then adjust the regen preset potmeter P3 until the Q-Multiplier starts oscillating. Now you have set up a smooth and backlash-free regen control.
