Hello,

Recently I bought from flea market a small carton of old, used radio tubes.  Amongst others there were three tubes, labeled as -Luxor- Sylvania, Made in USA. Please look at attached picture. The tube types are a bit hard to read but the one in the picture is 6A8G (heptode converter)  and others 6X5GT and 1F7(E?)G (?).These types are also mentioned in the Sylvania tube data book year 1955.

Without doubt the tubes are made by Sylvania but means the “Luxor” in the label. One possibility is that these are private labeled for the Swedish radio manufacturer Luxor . Does somebody have knowledge about this mystery?

Regards
Ake

Dear Åke,

I do not know for certain in this particular case, but it is typical of a valve manufacturer marking valves for a radio set manufacturer.

This is the case with, for example Marconi Wireless Telegraph (MWT) and others.   Sometimes only the Set manufaturer's name - sometimes both.

I do not have any examples of Luxor badged valves, but as a large manufacturer of sets, it is highly likely that they had a special price deal with Sylvania in return for the marking!

Kind regards,

Roy

Hello Ake,
lots of manufacturers installed tubes branded exclusively for them.
I do own tubes branded Zenith, branded Philco, The Fisher and others - even tubes branded Hewlett - Packard.
They also retailed such tubes for replacement purposes, packed into their own boxes bearing the respective company's 'corporate design'!
Some have a text printed on the base : "When renewing, insist on a genuine Zenith tube" - a good joke, since those never existed...... ;-)

For the records, please have a look at this "Luxor" tube, obviously a National Union product.

Hello all,

Thank you of your comments.

It seem that Luxor just have wisely used  their label as marketing tool “Specially made for Luxor”. It is also interesting that they had several suppliers so this habit was not one model trial.  May be those models has been made late 1940ties or so. Anyhow I haven’t seen this kind of tubes earlier but my knowledge of Luxor /Motal (SE) products is very limited.

Best regards

Ake
