Hello dear radiofriends,

A Philips 836A that I am restoring gives me following worries:

according to the label on the rear panel and to the circuit diagram, it should have Philips tubes E455, E462, E499, E433H and 1823 , but the set has Telefunken RENS1274, Philips E462, Thermion 5-438, Telefunken RES964 and Telefunken RGN1064 instead.

The rear panel carries also a label with this text " LICENCE S.E.M.-S.B.R.    BREVET PHILIPS"

Now I foud out that there was also a German version, originally equipped with Telefunken tubes. This model is also present in RMORG.

The serial number of my set is 1862C.

Has this set been manufactured in Germany?

Is the Thermion tube 5-438 equivalent to the Philips E499?

What was the reason to make Dutch Philips radios with Telefunken tubes?

What does the label "Licence etc" mean? Was this typical for Belgium?

Warm greetings

Beste Georges,

the license label indicates that this model was either manufactured under Philips licence or simply sold by the belgian company SBR. As far as I know, in the 30s SBR also sold GE and RCA.

There is an interesting site about SBR here.

SEM was also a belgian copany, the "Société d'Electricité et de Mécanique", I regularly find their their loudspeakers in radios and speakers. I am also searching information about this company.

There is an arcticle in the nederlandse Wikipedia about Philips in België that names SEM. My dutch is just not firm enough to get the details detangled.

Regarding the tube line-up - it can only be speculated as to where and when tubes have been replaced. So it might well be possible that the radio was sold to East Belgium where "changing nationality" influenced the availability of tubes. In any case, for identification purposes you can only rely on the printed information.

According to the 1960 Vade-Mecum the 5-438 is equivalent to REN1004. The tube is roughly similar to E499, but differs in conductance.

Dear Georges,

By any chance did you need to restore either the rheostat R1, R15, and R18, part number 25.840.010 and/or the R20, part number 28.808.290? I'm almost done restoring an 836A but both parts above are bad and I'm not sure a good way to get them back to live. Do you have any idea on how could I get a replacement or even a way to restore them? I would really appreciated some help.

Regards,

Carlos Lazarini

Dear friends,

I'm restoring a radio of that model. Unfortunately the dial is faded. Any suggestions on where I can get a reproduction.

Thanks,

Meyer
