The importance of wireless in Portugal
The importance of wireless in Portugal
I intend here in this forum to point out the importance of wireless during years from 61 to 74.
In 1961 the war in the Old Portuguese colonies began, (
The Portuguese political regime at time, kept people uninformed on what was going on these overseas "provinces". Radio sets, were the way employed by Portuguese to tune in their devices in order to listen clandestine broadcasting stations SW, (unauthorized by politic authorities, at that time), for example, Moscow Radio.
Authorities pursued people who were tuning in those radio stations. Also, authorities listen in along the streets of the most important cities, to discover clandestine broadcastings. Broadcasters were captured and immediately imprisoned and they were considered regime enemies, (political prisoners).
April of 1974 was the year of Portuguese revolution, it is known by revolution of the carnation, because blood was not spilled.
The political regime then fell, and all the "overseas provinces" that were the Portuguese regime underneath, were given to the auto determination and independence.
Conclusion: Wireless, in my modest opinion, had a preponderant power on April of 1974 revolution in order to achieve its desired proposals.

Portuguese Radio and it's importance
Thank you for publishing this valid information also in English - I have seen it in Portuguese the other day here but yes, I think it is even better to publish it in two languages. This story - and it is in a rather late time - is otherwise forgotten here.
It would also be very interesting to hear more about the fabrication of radios in Portugal and Brazil. I have the feeling that this was dominated by Philips in case of Portugal and in case of Brazil by US companies - mostly by only exporting. But I'm sure that already before WW2 there were emerging independent companies in Portugal. Maybe you know more or you can ask your collector friends here. Maybe you or some other members know when Portugal set up it's first transmitting station for broadcast?
If you have a text in Portuguese to be sent to all members in Portugal and Brazil I will gladly take your text and send it in your name to all of them by a feature we have in the system. If then there is more data you or they can publish in Portuguese and later we can attempt to translate it into English - or even German one day.
When I made a search for Portugal on the HP I saw only 15 models - mainly Philips ... :-((
We can help you to create makers and models if you can organise data. That is for sure.
RMorg is growing only by initiative. Thank you for yours.

Portuguese radio broadcasting history
A Portuguese radio history paper is available in http://telefonia.no.sapo.pt/datesportugal.htm.
The pity is that it is written in Portuguese.
Nevertheless one can perceive there, that the first broadcast transmission was performed by Fernando Gardelho Medeiros in 1914 in Lisbon.
Dr. Lomelino (perhaps the fist portuguese radiofriend) was tuning in a cristal receiver within easy distance of 100 meters
More curios can be seen there, like the presence of Mr. Guglielmo Marconi in Lisbon.

History of Radios
Dear fellow collectors,
thanks for the information about the end of the Estado Novo. While this is very informative and a part of the history of radio broadcast, I'd rather refrain to the history of radio manufacture.
I agree with Ernst that it would be quite nice to have more information on radios of portuguese origin.
If there is the need for translation into german or english, I think I can help - my portuguese is far from being good, but with the occasional help of Mário I am sure it will work out.
Cumprimentos,
Mark
