This is the Rogers Majestic R-400 portable transistor radio from 1957, fully restored by me. It is almost identical to the Philips L3X71T (Sharpie), Philips' first all-transistor radio, build on a steel chassis instead of a printed wiring board, and in a hand-made wooden case. The only difference with the Sharpie is that the R-400 has shortwave as the second band instead of longwave (the longwave band is not used for broadcast on the North American continent) During the fifties, Rogers Majestic was a Philips subsidiary. Rogers marketed many other Philips classics that were adapted for the North American market. The radio is powered from 6 "D" cells and draws only 10 mA at normal volume, which is low even for today's standards. It can play continuously for a month from a fresh set of batteries. As such, it was a huge leap forward from the portable tube radios of the day, where the battery was pretty much gone after two days of continuous usage. The radio sounds excellent (due to its large speaker )and I still use it once in a while for casual AM listening.
