The "types" 121-nn / 103-nn in the schematics are Zenith part numbers. They indicate the real EIA type(s) - by one or more manufacturers.
The 500D being the first high performane pocket radio had 8 transistors (an extra RF stage besides improved IF circuitry and others). That is 1 more transistor than the previous 500s used. It also got a new speaker grill.
Case Nylon; The very early production did not have the D painted to the Front, but the words "long distance" were there (as with the later 500E).
