SPARTON. The Sparton Corporation was founded as the Withington Company in 1900 in Jackson, Michigan, by Philip and Winthrop Withington. William Sparks became the third partner in the business a few years later and the company name was changed to the Sparks-Withington Company. CARDON. Cardon Phonocraft Corp., Jackson, Michigan. Founded by Sparks-Withington, named after two of Sparks' grandsons: CARter and DONald = Cardon. CARDON made Cardon and Sparton branded tubes, which were used in the Cardon ans Sparton models.

History:
In 1929, Sparton negotiated a licence with RCA a after showing that it had the capability and will to do without RCA if necessary. Once licenced by RCA, Cardon was incorporated in Sparton Co and ceased making its own tubes. But for some time Sparton branded tubes were used, which were made by RCA with RCA designations.
