History:

Charles Henry Stearn was born in Jamaica in 1844 and worked with Joseph Swan in 1877 on the incandescent lamp Swan was trying to perfect. In 1882 he was appointed managing director of the Swan United Electric Light Co.

When the Swan patents expired, he began making his own lamps at Kew Gardens. By 1918 the factory was producing the R tube for the British Military.

C.H. Stearn died after a short illness in 1919.
