The W.T. Grant Company had department stores in principal cities in the USA. They sold quality radio products and amongst them Songbird tubes in Songbird boxes. Early Songbird tubes had an own designation system and some non-standard types.

History:

In 1906 the first W.T.Grant Co 25 Cent Store opened in Lynn, Massachusetts USA. It had expanded to have stores in the principal cities of the US by 1917. The company had an annual turnover in 1936 of one hundred million dollars. By the time of Grant's death, at 96  in 1972, there were nearly 1200 stores. Grant arranged for many products sold by the company to have specific trade mark names for them. These trade marks were registerted with the US Government.

 

In the radio field, quality products were sold; the name Songbird was used for radios and tubes.The actual manufacturer of thes tubes is not known but the tubes had the type number in a circle a the top of the bulb. Thes numbers were digital with no prefix. A paper label was placed on the glass showing the Songbird name. Tubes found have been manufactured in the mid to late 1920's and are of the more popular types such as 199 and 201A, Some non standard types were also sold by the company
