A well-known New Zealand manufacturer of car radios from 1947 till 2000.

Founded: 1947
Closed: 2000
Production: 1947 - 2000
History:

In 1946 George Benson and Perc Wills, formed a partnership known as Benson & Wills and commenced the small-scale manufacture of car radios using the name “Autocrat” A third partner, Mr. Walker joined in 1947 and they manufactured under the name of Benson, Wills & Walker. Autocrat Radio Ltd. was registered in 1949 and by 1957 moved to larger premises at  Carr Road, Mt. Roskill.

Autocrat were probably best known for their car radios although they did make radiograms and record players. For many years they had a clear uncontested dominance of the car radio section of the radio industry in New Zealand.

According to the late John Stokes in More Golden Age of Radio, page 158, they also sold under Ford and National brand car radios.

By 1955 they were producing dual-use radios that ran on mains or 12V such as the Model PCR54.

Their first hybrid car radio was the 1957 Model TP1 with 4 valves and a single audio output transistor.

In 1976 they formed a partnership with Sanyo in Japan and became Sanyo Autocrat Holdings Ltd.
