History:

Rise and Fall of Pelican Portable Radios:

Birth of a Brand:

  • Established in 1925, Pell Cahill & Co., Ltd. (later Cahill & Co. Ltd.) launched the Pelican brand of portable radios.
  • Key figures behind the company included  L. H. Pell, M. R. Cahill, and J. C. I. McConnell. [1]

Pelican's Unique Selling Points:

  • Convenience: Pelican radios boasted being easily portable and simple to operate.
  • No Antennas: No unsightly aerial or earth connections were required, a major selling point for those who preferred clutter-free setups.
  • Optional Long-Distance Reception: Despite the no-antenna design, Pelican sets offered the option to connect aerials and earth for enhanced reception at longer distances.

Innovation: The Pelican Univernier Dial:

  • Pelican introduced the innovative Univernier dial, promising precise tuning and improved selectivity.
  • This sensitive dial responded to the slightest touch, allowing for pinpoint station adjustments and optimal signal strength.
  • Existing radios could be upgraded with Univernier dials by simply replacing the variable condenser or variometer dials.[2]

Shifting Sands:

  • The company advertised as Pell Cahill & Co. Ltd. until December 1925, then switched to Cahill & Co. Ltd.
  • By October 1928, the Pelican four-valve portable set was no longer produced by Cahill & Co. Ltd. and had been taken over by Cliftophone & Records Ltd. [3]
