Gallo (Africa) Ltd.; Johannesburg South Africa: The largest and oldest record label in Africa, and South Africa's first recording company. The company also supplied affordable portable record players, transistor radios and television sets. |
Founded: | 1926 |
History: |
In February 1926, Eric Gallo opened the Brunswick Gramophone House, a small retail shop selling gramophones and records in Pritchard Street, Johannesburg. After some success, Gallo secured agreements with Decca, JVC and Trutone. In 1932, the first South African recording studio was established in a basement in Johannesburg. A local record pressing plant was set up shortly after World War II. The firm became a public company in 1946, the name being revised to Gallo (Africa) Limited.
With the advent of television in South Africa in 1975, a consortium was formed, comprising Gallo (Africa), the Phil Morkel group and Electra Television Group, under the name The South African Television Manufacturing Company (Limited). This company concluded a technology agreement with A.E.G. Telefunken, and a TV manufacturing plant was built, staffed by around 60 key personnel from Germany. Gallo marketed TV sets under the name JVC (Japan Victor Co.)
Gallo (Africa) also expanded into consumer appliances, electronics, hi-fi equipment, audio products and musical instruments. Other products distributed by Gallo (Africa) include Bell and Howell 16mm projectors, Moulinex (France), Scotch recording tapes, Encyclopedia Brittanica, Rank Lighting and Vinten studio equipment
