1995 erfanden Carles Puente Baliarda und sein Team die erste Fraktalantenne für mobile Kommunikation. Der Name - und das leistungsstarke Sendepotenzial - der Antenne leiten sich von geometrischen Eigenschaften ab: Fraktale sind Muster, die aus mehreren kleinen Kopien ihrer selbst bestehen, wodurch lange Antennen in das kleine Gehäuse von Mobilgeräten "gewickelt" werden können.
Die von Puente Baliarda zur Vermarktung seiner Erfindung gegründete Firma Fractus verzeichnete 2009 einen Umsatz von 3,6 Millionen US-Dollar. Inzwischen hat das Unternehmen sein Geschäftsmodell über die Herstellung von Antennen hinaus erweitert und erteilt nun auch Lizenzen für seine Technologie. Strategische Lizenzierungsabkommen mit großen Mobiltelefonproduzenten wie LG, HTC und Motorola trugen zu einem Umsatzanstieg auf 111 Millionen US-Dollar im Jahr 2012 bei. Heute ist Fractus weltweit führend in der Entwicklung und Herstellung von Fraktalantennen und hält mehr als 150 Patente.
Ein Fraktal ist ein mathematisches Gebilde oder Muster, das aus sogenannten "selbstähnlichen" Einheiten besteht, die jeweils wie das Gesamtgebilde aussehen: Stellen Sie sich eine aus kleineren Bäumen zusammensetzte Baumfigur vor. Auf fraktalen Mustern basierende Fraktalantennen bestehen aus mehreren sich selbst wiederholenden Elementen oder "Iterationen", die mit denselben Verfahren und Materialien hergestellt werden wie Platinen.Jede Iteration einer Fraktalantenne entspricht auch einem bestimmten Frequenzbereich. Dank mehrerer Iterationen kann die Antenne mehrere Frequenzen und Bandweiten bedienen - was mit den begrenzten Möglichkeiten einer "linearen" Antenne nicht möglich ist.
