History:

R. H. White Company was founded in 1853 and had its first place of business on Winter Street. They moved to new premises between 518 and 536 Washington Street in 1876. The block long building, designed by Peabody and Stearns, was shown to the public December 27th of 1876 and would house the main branch of the R.H. White Company for the rest of its Boston existence.

In 1944 City Stores took ownership of R.H. White. The Boston main store was closed in 1957, the other branches were closed by 1980 in the wake of the bankrupcy of City Stores.
