Summary:

James White (1824-1884), Glasgow was manufacturing Kelvin's Products like the Vertical Electrostatic Voltmeter in various forms. James White was the sole maker of many of Lord Kelvin's seventy patents. He established his business in 1849 with Kelvin's financial backing. White died in 1884, but his Glasgow firm prospered into the 1960 after it became the name Kelvin, Bottomley & Baird in 1900.

History:

James White, Galsgow was manufacturing also the "Multicellular Voltmeter from Lord Kelvin's Patents in ca. 1895 to 1899. See also: "British Patent Specification No.18035, Dec 1888, Electrostatic Apparatus for Measuring Potentials." The "Kelvin Vertical Electrostatic Voltmeter" was made by the same company, but very similar (probably later) also by KELVIN, BOTTOMLEY & BAIRD, LTD LATE KELVIN & JAS.WHITE LTD in Glasgow and London. This was sold by Christies for £ 456 (at that time $ 901) May 2007.

There is also a patent US 809793A by James Ferguson for Kelvin & James White Ltd., filed March 29, 1904 for an Electrostatic Voltmeter of a much more modern type.
