Comet Battery Services was founded in 1933 in Hull, by George Hollingbery & Walter Honor as a business charging submarine batteries.
By 1958 it had been built up into a retailing and television rental business with several branches.
Around 1967 the company diversified into selling "white goods" (refrigerators, washing machines, etc.) radio, televisions and HiFi, which were sold direct from their warehouse.
To start with Comet neither displayed nor demonstrated their products, which made them unpopular with other retailers. But later chose to “smarten up their act” and started to display their goods, although it was normally only televisions that were demonstrated.
Retailers were also placated by some manufacturers producing slight variants with different model numbers specifically for Comet and other retailers.
In 1980 Michael Hollingbery (son) sold a controlling share to Woolworth Holdings PLC. Which subsequently became Kingfisher.
