Founded: 1838
History:

David Jones, born in Wales, opened a Department store on the corner of George and Barrack Streets, Sydney in May 1838. This is opposite the Sydney General Post Office. In 187 the store was rebuilt and expanded. Following its listing as a public company in 1906, the company was listed on the Sydney Stock Exchange in 1920. Land was purchased at the corner of Castlereagh, Market and Elizabeth Streets shortly after this and a large new store was opened there in 1927. This became the head office. Another building was erected on a diagonal corner to the main store in the 1940's and this was connected by a large tunnel under the street intersection. It was used mainly for stock movements but has some storage areas. In the 20 years from 1955, DJ's (as they are commonly known)opened several regional and interstate stores in major Eastern cities. David jones always had a commitment to world class service. Many items on offer were, and still are, top brands.

Radios and tubes were sold by the company from at least the mid 1920's. "Wireless weekly", the Sydney based radio magazine, carried an advertisement for the "D.J. Super-Six". This set was branded D.J. but the manufacturer is not known. In the latter years of the 1920's Philips in Holland made standard type tubes, possibly unbranded, for the company and these were later stamped DJ in gold paint on the tube base. The DJ equivalent of the Philips A409 and PH224 (UY224) have ben seen.

This manufacturer was suggested by Fin Stewart.
