History: |
One of the earliest adverts for the Premier Radio Co. was in 1930 and they were in Birmingham. [1] Premier Supply Stores, of 20, Clapham High Street, Clapham advertised in March 1935, the opening of their city branch at 165, Fleet Street London. [2] In September 1938 Premier products were on display at Radiolympia Exhibition on the Morris & Co. (Radio) Ltd. stand as described in Short Wave Magazine August 1938. Morris & Co. (Radio) Ltd., The products of this firm are very well known to all our readers under the name of Premier, and it is impossible to mention here more than a few items which appear on their stand. We should be doing them less than justice if we did not first say that Mess. Morris and Co. are making a very real contribution to the amateur market. Being staffed by experienced transmitters, who know what is required, the range of apparatus available is not only exactly suited to amateur needs but is also extremely reasonably priced. A good example is the new Premier Communication Receiver, a five-valve five-band set covering 12-2,000 metres with electrical band-spread, BFO, send-receive switch built-in speaker, and phone jack. It is housed in a black steel cabinet and costs only eight guineas complete. We prophesy that this receiver will attract a great deal of attention. Then there is a complete ten-watt transmitter, for CW and phone operation on any band to 28 Mc, having a built-in power pack; with coils and crystal for any two bands, the price is ten guineas. Other items on show include a C.R. tube outfit, on which any testing work can be done, even that hitherto only possible with much higher-priced equipment. The unit is complete, beautifully built, and finished, and costs £10 10s. Another important contribution to amateur requirements is the range of variable impedance matching transformers, which ensure high-efficiency phone working over three power ratings of 50, 150, and 300. watts in the modulated stage. The new Matchmaker universal output transformers, also in three ratings of 5-7, 10-15, and 20-30 watts, and priced (for example) at 29s. 6d. for the latter, will be particularly attractive to the low-power man, since each transformer allows eleven different ratios to be used. Messrs. Morris also shows a comprehensive range of the small parts they actually manufacture, such as variable condensers, chokes, coils, etc., etc., and in our view, their stand cannot fail to interest every short-wave enthusiast. [3] [4] In the late 1950s, Morris & Co. (Radio) Ltd. changed their name to B. H. Morris & Co. (Radio) Ltd. [5] They opened a new branch in the middle of the West End in 1958. Premier Radio Co. Ltd. have now opened a new branch of their well-known business at 23 Tottenham Court Road, W.I. In the middle of the West End, just 2 minutes from Tottenham Court Road Underground Station, this new shop includes an elaborately fitted Hi-Fi demonstration room complete with the Premier range of amplifiers and featuring various other well-known amplifier types and makes. A complete range of Do-It-Yourself kits, including radio, radiogram, tape recorder, and TV kits are on show and available from stock. Every type of radio kit from a 1-valve receiver to the "Mayfair" TV is included in the available stock. [6] The company formed an alliance with Stern Radio Ltd. and both companies were selling each other products at their London stores. [7] In October 1963 Clyne Radio Ltd., Premier Radio, and Stern Radio Ltd., amalgamated under the name Stern-Clyne Ltd. [8] They opened a nationwide UK network of retail Electronic Centres in London and regional cities. And advertised as the amalgamation would make “Great Britain's Greatest Electronic Hobbies Organisation”. B. H. Morris & Co. (Radio) Ltd. became British wholesalers for the Trio brand of products in 1967. [9]
