Electrical Specialty Mfg. Co. Ltd. (ESM); 17-19 Glebe Street, Glebe, NSW.

Founded: 1933

Production: 1933 - 1937
History:

Two Engineers, Oliver Clive Turner and George Schliesman resigned from EMMCO and formed Electrical Specialty Mfg. Co. Ltd. which was registered June 1933.[1][2]

The company built and marketed table and console radios initially under the “ESM” Brand with the theme “Radio That Lives”.[3] In August 1934 they started advertising their radios as "The Aristocrat of Radios"[4]

In the April 4, 1935 Edition of the Wireless Weekly the company advertised “Introducing The Aristocrat” with an elegantly dressed lady and the two Russian Wolfhounds (Borzoi) on the front over.[5].

The word “Aristocrat” was under an image of the two Russian Wolfhounds on the console dial escutcheon and the image of two Wolfhounds were cut into in the speaker fretwork on table models.

They marketed radios through distributers throughout Australia.

Today, the radios with the Wolfhounds are highly appreciated and sort after by collectors.

The company advertising continued until 1937 when the company name changed to Syme Electrical Specialty Mfg. Co. Ltd., located at the same address 17-19 Glebe Street. The Aristocrat brand was continued without the hounds and the “Radio That Lives” theme.

At the time of writing no information could be found as to how this takeover occurred.
