Manufacturer of Cables, Car Aerials, and Antenna Cables, also Television Band III/I Converters.

Became a subsidiary of Nettle Accessories in 1947 and continued to manufacture Ashton electric wiring & accessories, television aerials & associated equipment.

History:

Founded by L. S. Hargreaves in 1932 to manufacture cable, Bakelite mouldings, antennas, etc. [1]

An example of their 1937 products was on display at the Olympia Radio Show on 4 September.

Among the many varieties of aerial made by this firm is an all-wave model which, complete, costs 17s. 6d. Motor car types; indoor and outdoor patterns and fittings of all kinds are available.

 In addition, they now have a long range of HT batteries and a short-wave converter covering 13 to 65 metres which costs £3. A carbon microphone and a moving coil loudspeaker in chassis and cabinet form are also shown. Wireless World, August 27th, 1937, Page 207.

In 1945 it became a public company. Also, during this year, the whole of the store's section of the Castle Works at Stalybridge was destroyed by fire and was replaced by a new and modern building [2]

In 1947 they were acquired by Nettle Accessories.

Their 1955-56 Catalogue listed Ashton Lighting Cables, Flexible’s, PVC and Polyurethane & Hargreaves wrote their six factories are working together, yet each specialising in particular products.

At Stalybridge, seven acres of factory space are making cable from the smallest to the largest, from connecting wire to sixty-pair armoured telephone cable, and of course our famous TV down Leads.

At Wythenshawe, metal parts & mouldings of all types, where we make all our TV aerial insulators & parts, switches, sockets, lamp holders and plugs, & industrial mouldings.

At Blackburn the new Band III convertors, preamplifiers, etc., & at Congleton, TV aerials & similar equipment.

At Johannesburg, electric cable, at Salisbury (Rhodesia) electric cable & altogether we have 1,800 of us doing our best to give you the products you require. [3]

In 1958 they produced their 40 millionth aerial. [4]

They acquired the manufacturing & distribution of the transistorised Casian Ltd. Trav-ler Tape Recorder in late 1960. [5]

According to UK Government Company Information Service, the company was liquidated around 1985.
