Gentlemen,

It has been a while since I check in with you.  It has been a great summer here in Pittsburgh PA.

Today I opened up a Grundig 88U.  Three tube AM/FM radio.  The American version I believe.  It has an interlocking power cord (cheater cord) and American words on the back cover.  My question is two fold.

1)      It the iron core object an auto transformer, choke or a power transformer with a primary and isolated secondary?  In the European model it is an auto transformer. This makes the radio a hot chassis unit.

2)      Is there an American alignment document available?  I tried to locate an “88U” but no success.

I will be restoring this radio once I come back from the Kutztown PA swap meet.  I see several paper/wax capacitors that look questionable.  The radio plays but poorly on FM.  All the FM stations are fuzzy and distorted.

There are some light blemishes and minor scratches on the red plastic.  I will be using the Novice polish #1, 2 and possibly 3 to restore the original mirror like finish.

Thanks,

Paul P.

Hans,

Than you for the reply.  Is it possible to see the rest of the 88U schematic and the alignment procedure?  My father's girl friend can translate for me.

I do not believe the "U" version has been uploaded to the RM org database.

Thanks again,

Paul Pinyot.

Hello Paul.

Please create the Model 88U in RMorg. Read blue buttons.

After that i bring the Circuit there, Alignment Instruction is not available here in germany.

You can use the German- Version,  only the FM-Range is different 87,5 to 100Mcs and 88 to 108Mcs.

When not in RMorg, i can send this via Mail to you. Its can not locate on Model 88U in german language.

I see, its there.

Hans,

Thank you for posting the alignment procedure.  I will have it translated.  Well at least the instructions in the tables.

This donated radio may go to a student.  I am teaching an Elmer Night at my Amateur radio club next month, on how to restore tube radios.  There are a few attendees that want the "Hands-on" experience.  Those students and I will hold a separate restoration Lab each person with a radio in need of love and affection. I figure there will be about 5 to 10 interested persons.

I like to pass on donated units (radios, test gear, documents) to those who can learn and use those items for hobby interests. I am not in this hobby for the money.  I don't really think many of us are.

Elmer, a man,  is a legendary licensed Amateur radio operator who spent a lot of personal time teaching others about electronics and Ham radio.  So to Elmer is to teach electronics or radio for free and help others appreciate the craft.

Sorry if I go on too much.  I just appreciate the help I receive here at RM.ORG.

Thanks again to  you and all the "Elmers" at RM.ORG!

Paul.

PS - I will post some pictures for the site using the blue buttons as per your request.

Is help needed for the 88U upload?

I would like to bring this thread up again as a reminder that the Grundig 88U has not yet been uploaded. Maybe some help is welcome?

I think that RMorg is an important place to show all the export models of the European countries if this is at all possible.

Why?
Normally collectors look up the www to find hints for a defined radio if the set shows technical problems: If we have uploaded that model then they will find immediately and most often resulting in help if they join us ...

Since the models were made for export (only) we miss here often schematics etc. But at least somebody knows from which very similar model the export version derived - and can still help. And we have a chance to get the schematic uploaded - to help the next collector ... Please send information by using the contact form (as a guest) or create a new model (as a member). Thank you.

Who has knowledge of an export model we do not list yet and can help us to be complete on that?

I listed my Grundig 88U using the blue buttons that creat a new model.  I hope all the information is good.  I have three pictures to upload for this 88U.  Do I wait for the new model to be created or is there a place to load the pictures?

Dear Paul
Sometimes I use the link "*** Please remind me *** to track a thread like this.
Now I see that you have uploaded your first new model - and uploaded some pictures to the model.

Congratulations!

Only by this RMorg can prosper. As a reward Hans M. Knoll has uploaded a perfect schematic and included some other technical documents in this thread. This we call professional teamwork.
One can see on the scale, case and schematic that this is the export version of the Grundig 88.

It would be very nice if you find any other US model which has not yet been uploaded and that more US members do this first step - or help bringing in more data to existing models. Our aim is to get a full catalogue somebody can depend on. That is the reason that some administrators try to check if data is brought in correct. There still may slip something and therefore we are very happy if somebody tells us - for instance using the contact form if he/she is a guest. This form allows also up to 3 pictures.
