Cockatoo Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest island in Sydney Harbour. It's located at the junction of the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers about 10 minutes by ferry from Circular Quay. Getting to Cockatoo IslandGetting to Cockatoo Island is easy with regular Harbour City Ferries daily services from Circular Quay, Darling Harbour and other inner harbour wharfs.Harbour City Ferries currently operates services to Cockatoo Island via the Parramatta River service which also includes Balmain and Woolwich. Ferries depart from Circular Quay and other wharves. Some services also connect to Darling Harbour or to Woolwich and Balmain. Recent use and activitiesThe island is managed by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust which is also responsible for seven other lands around Sydney Harbour. The Harbour Trust is revitalising the island as a landmark harbour attraction with cultural events and heritage interpretation. Today Cockatoo Island retains some remnants of its past. Its prison buildings have been World Heritage listed, part of a serial listing of 11 Australian Convict Sites.Although some large workshops, slipways, wharves, residences and other buildings remain, major buildings were demolished after Cockatoo Island closed as a dockyard in 1991; pictured right. As the remaining buildings contain few of their original industrial artefacts and none of the remaining industrial heritage including the docks, caissons and cranes is operational, it is difficult to currently see how the island functioned as a dockyard for over a century. Some of the highlightsElectric Portal Jib Crane - Installed in 1970s, this visually prominent crane was used for the fitting out of ships on the Sutherland Wharf.Powerhouse - The engine room of the island, used to drive dockyard pumps and island machinery, it is a magnificent industrial artefact. Marvel at the chimney's epic proportions. Turbine Shop - The enormity of this space gives a great indication of the vast scale of heavy engineering that took place here. Wolverine Film Set - Die-hard fans will get a kick from the remnant film set where the pivotal escape scene in Wolverine was shot. |
