Description

Texture extract from The Peenemünde Historical Technical Museum:

The A4 rocket, which was developed in Peenemünde can be considered the prototype of all later booster rockets, both military and civil. It is the emblem of modern rocketry, whose humanitarian and utopian roots stand in stark contrast to the suffering of its victims. There are few sites where the gains and risks of technological progress are as intimately intertwined as at Peenemünde. The Peenemünde Historical Technical Museum attempts to explore and address the ambivalence of this technological development.

The Center's 5,000 m² of exhibition space contains documents, original rocket parts, interviews with witnesses of the events, documentary films and models. These items illustrate the historical development that led from the dreams of the early rocket pioneers to civil spaceflight and to the systematic development of the first large-scale military missiles in Peenemünde, and their serial production and use in warfare. A second part of the exhibition is devoted to the further development of rocket technology after the Second World War - largely to the arms race during the "Cold War", but also to the first breakthroughs in civil spaceflight. more...

The former power station of the Peenemünde Test Site is now the largest technical monument in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is open to visitors as part of the exhibition. Both the architectural aesthetic and the operational details of the plant illustrate the totalitarian aims of the Nazi state. The building also demonstrates the massive scale and high technological standard of the testing facilities during the period. Numerous large objects are on display outdoors on the 120,000 m² grounds of the power station. more...

The Peenemünde Monument Landscape opened in the summer of 2007. A signposted path leads from the museum to the original sites on the 25 square kilometer area of the former testing facilities. more...

The Peenemünde Museum offers comprehensive visitor services. Take advantage of a range of offers, including individual tours, audioguides, a museum shop, as well as an academic archive. Rooms for hosting events are available for rental. more...
