Luxor ist eine ägyptische Stadt am östlichen Ufer des Nils etwa im Zentrum Oberägyptens.

Mit Qinā und Esna ist Luxor entlang des Nils durch eine Bahnlinie verbunden, die am östlichen Flussufer entlang im Süden bis nach Assuan führt. Der Bahnhof der Stadt ist zentral gelegen und etwa 800 Meter vom Nil entfernt.

Neben der Bahn verbindet eine Straße die größeren Städte an den Ufern des Nils. Dabei besteht zehn Kilometer südwestlich von Luxor über die Brücke bei Aḑ Ḑabīyah die einzige Straßenverbindung zum Westufer des Flusses zwischen Qinā und Esna.

Der internationale Flughafen der Stadt befindet sich sieben Kilometer südöstlich des Stadtzentrums am Rand der Arabischen Wüste.

Auf dem Nil als wichtiger Verkehrsader verkehren von Luxor als Ausgangs- oder Endpunkt viele Kreuzfahrtschiffe nach Assuan im Süden wie auch nördlich bis zum antiken Abydos. Die Schiffsanlegestellen liegen innerhalb der Stadt entlang des gesamten östlichen Nilufers.

PS Sudan

PS Sudan is a passenger-carrying side-wheel paddle steamer on the River Nile in Egypt. Along with PS Arabia she was one of the largest river steamers in Thomas Cook's Nile fleet. The director John Guillermin filmed some scenes of the 1978 film of Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile aboard Sudan. The steamer spent the latter years of the 20th century laid up and in deteriorating condition but new French owners bought her in 2000 and returned her to service in 2001.

In 2004, it was again used for an adaptation of Death on the Nile.

Already around the turn of the century Sudan had a diesel engine. Since then its distinctive chimney has only been decoration.
