In the north of France on the Picardy coast

Saint-Valery Canal

This was the site of the original terminus of the standard gauge branch from Noyelles, opened on 5 June 1858. It is now the site of their depot, although some of the original buildings still survive.

Description

Somme Bay Railway

In the north of France on the Picardy coast, ride on a steam train around one of the most beautiful bays in the world, preserved in its wild state. Among marshes, salt marshes, willows and reeds, beside the sea and alongside the Baie de Somme, bring the family, or come with friends or in a group like so many travellers on the sea-bathers' railway since 1887.

The journey

Located in the north of France on the Picardy coast, the Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme has since 1971 operated the “sea bathers' railway” which began in 1887 .

Along all 27 kilometres of the route you will discover a variety of scenery of flora and fauna in an environment which is being carefully conserved and in which the railway belongs as a permanent feature.

Between land and sea, the Baie de Somme will surprise you with the relaxed rhythms of its historic steam trains.

Gauge

The line from Noyelles sur Mer to Le Crotoy is metre gauge.

The line from Noyelles sur Mer to Saint-Valery Ville is of dual gauge, with metre gauge tracks laid within standard gauge track, thus having four rails. At Saint-Valery there is a branch to the Saint-Valery docks which is dual gauge, but having three rails only. The line from Saint-Valery Ville to Cayeux (Brighton Plage) is metre gauge.
