Dunkirk (French: Dunkerque, Dutch: Duinkerke(n) is a commune in the Nord department in northern France. It lies 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) from the Belgian border.

Dunkirk has a ferry connection which does not accept foot passengers with Dover, England. The Gare de Dunkerque railway station offers connections to Gare de Calais-Ville, Gare de Lille Flandres, Arras and Paris, and several regional destinations in France.

Description

The museum's collections dock depict the millennial history of Dunkirk, strategic port in the North Sea, in turn Spanish fortress, impregnable citadel under Louis XIV, City of privateers or theater Operation Dynamo.

The superb collection of models presented in the Naval Gallery shows the evolution of ships over the centuries. While schooners and frigates evoke the time of sailing ships and race war, ships paddlewheel recall the birth of regular shipping lines in the nineteenth century. Closest in time, models of LNG and container illustrate the expertise of Chantiers de France, which in the space of 85 years, built at Dunkirk over 325 ships.

In het museum wordt een historisch overzicht gegeven van de stad en vooral de haven van Duinkerke. De haven ligt op een geografisch en strategisch gunstige plaats, dicht bij Engeland en Het Kanaal met veel scheepvaartverkeer. In de diverse zalen komen diverse aspecten van de haven aan de orde.

Voor het museum liggen drie schepen, de driemaster Dutchesse Anne (1901), het lichtschip Sandettié (1947) en de sleepboot Entreprenant (1965). De schepen zijn alleen onder begeleiding te bezoeken. Het museum biedt ook de mogelijkheid de vuurtoren van Duinkerke te bezoeken.
