Description

THE MARITIME AND HISTORY MUSEUM OF THE CROATIAN LITTORAL has been one of the most important meeting-places of culture in the city of Rijeka for the last four decades. With its permanent display and many valuable exhibitions from its own holdings or of other Croatian museums it takes part in tracing the important events.

Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral

The Technical Collection

The Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral established the Technical Collection in 2007 in which material of the industrial heritage of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County is gathered and preserved. In the collection are preserved the products of factories and workshops which represent their contribution to the technological development of industry on the local and global level. In the collection are also
various sewing machines,
old telephone equipment,
typewriters,
old phonographs and gramophones,
radio receivers,
radiotelegraph equipment from the period of end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century.
The collection’s holding was enriched in 2008 with the donation of the bequest of Josip Medur when numerous diving equipment,
fishing accessories and
equipment for underwater filming arrived in the museum.
Amongst these items are the most important examples of diving equipment and underwater spear guns produced in Rijeka and Kostrena.
An important part of the material is made up of a group of items of the Torpedo Factory which were once part of the factory museum – Museo del Silurificio Whitehead which had its own display in the administrative building of the factory from 1936 until the end of World War II. Amongst the products of the Torpedo Factory are
steam-powered torpedo motors,
torpedo propellers,
igniters for warheads,
gyroscopic direction leveller and
depth devices.
Thanks to these items it is now possible today to show the development of the production of the torpedo in Rijeka from the late 19th to mid-20th century.
