| Description | Experience the cathedral of steam!The ir. D.F. Woudagemaal in Lemmer, opened in 1920 by Queen Wilhelmina, is the largest steam-driven pumping station in the world still in use.Even today the monumental pumping station ensures that the people of Fryslân keep their feet dry during high water. When that happens, the ‘cathedral of steam’ pumps up over four million litres of water per minute from the Frisian ‘boezem’ (drainage pool) into the IJsselmeer.Masterly experienceThe visitor centre, which is connected to the pumping station by means of a walkway, is a spectacular experience for both young and old. The experience centre provides you with information on the Woudagemaal and water management in Fryslân by means of an impressive 3D movie, an interactive water table, the Hall of Fame, animations and experiments.Experience the immense power of steam.From the modern visitor centre you can make a guided tour to the pumping station with its majestic machine hall and adjoining boiler house. Stoomgemaal bij Lemmer
Het Woudagemaal is gebouwd in de nadagen van het stoomtijdperk. In de 19e en eerste helft van de 20e eeuw stonden 's winters grote delen van Fryslân onder water. Om wateroverlast in Fryslân tegen te gaan, is in 1913 besloten een stoomgemaal bij Lemmer te bouwen.
Het Woudagemaal werd in 1920 geopend door Koningin Wilhelmina en heeft als grootste nog werkende stoomgemaal ter wereld nog steeds een praktische functie in de Friese waterhuishouding. Stoom, water en architectuurHet gemaal is vernoemd naar ir. Dirk Frederik Wouda (1880-1961), toen hoofdingenieur van de Provinciale Waterstaat. Hij was verantwoordelijk voor ontwerp en uitvoering van het gemaal in de stijl van de Amsterdamse School. Bij de berekening van de werktuigbouwkundige installaties werd ir. Wouda bijgestaan door ir. J.C. Dijxhoorn (1862-1941) van de Technische Hogeschool Delft.Monument op stoomTot de bouw van het elektrisch Hooglandgemaal in Stavoren (1966) werd het stoomgemaal gebruikt om het peil van het Friese oppervlaktewater te beheersen. Het gemaal komt nu alleen nog in actie bij extreem hoge waterstanden.Naast hulpgemaal is dit bijzondere gebouw nog op andere gebieden van grote betekenis. De schoorsteen met een hoogte van meer dan zestig meter is een herkenbaar punt (baken) voor schippers op het IJsselmeer. Daarnaast zijn het gebouw en de stoommachines trekpleisters voor architectuur- of stoomliefhebbers. Het bouwkundig en technisch waardevolle Woudagemaal is sinds 1977 een beschermd monument en staat vanaf 1998 op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO.
