The MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology,
presenting itself as a new cultural centre in the city of Lisbon, the MAAT represents an ambition to host national and international exhibitions with contributions by contemporary artists, architects and thinkers.

A space for debate, critical thinking and international dialogue, which offers an intense and diverse programme conceived for all audiences and ages.

The MAAT also represents the EDP group’s intent to help revitalise the riverfront of Belém’s historic district. Designed by the prestigious British architecture firm Amanda Levete Architects – whose curriculum includes distinctions such as the RIBA Stirling Prize -, the project involves approximately 3 thousand square metres of exhibitive space plus 7 thousand square metres of public space. The new building rises on the riverfront with an architectural narrative that is sensitive to the city’s cultural heritage and future, offering, among other features, a pedestrian roof that offers a privileged view of Lisbon and the Tagus, and which immediately became an iconic location.

With this proposal, the EDP Foundation has created a unique space in the city: a campus measuring 38 thousand square metres where the new building, with its cosmopolitan design, coexists with the iconic Tejo Power Station, connected through a landscape project designed by Lebanese architect Vladimir Djurovic.

The Tejo Power Station
is a unique example of Portugal’s historical, industrial and architectural heritage from the first half of the 20th century. The building was listed as a Building of Public Interest, and today it has been fully restored, including the original machinery.

Nowadays the Tejo Power Station tells the story of electricity, evoking the functioning past and working environment of the old factory.

The new Power Station Tour brings together both the technological heritage and future energies. The largest collection on the history of electricity in Portugal, and a selection of exhibits which portray the evolution of electricity up to the age of renewable energies, offer fascinating insight into the subject of electricity.

O MAAT – Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia
é a nova proposta cultural para a cidade de Lisboa. Um museu que cruza três áreas num espaço de debate, de descoberta, de pensamento crítico e de diálogo internacional. Um projeto inovador que coloca em comunicação um novo edifício, desenhado pelo atelier de arquitetura Amanda Levete Architects, e a Central Tejo, um dos exemplos nacionais de arquitetura industrial da primeira metade do século XX, e um dos polos museológicos mais visitados do país.

O MAAT traduz a ambição de apresentar exposições nacionais e internacionais com o contributo de artistas, arquitetos e pensadores contemporâneos. Refletindo sobre grandes temas e tendências atuais, a programação apresentará ainda diversos olhares curatoriais sobre a Coleção de Arte da Fundação EDP.

A programação do MAAT começou a 30 de junho de 2016 com a apresentação de quatro exposições em salas renovadas do edifício da Central Tejo. A 5 de outubro do mesmo ano, o novo edifício foi inaugurado com uma obra de grandes dimensões criada pela artista francesa Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster especificamente para este espaço.

Com o MAAT, a Fundação EDP oferece um novo impulso cultural e paisagístico à cidade de Lisboa. A diversidade de programas e de espaços tornam-no num importante ponto no roteiro cultural da cidade. Uma proposta pensada para todos os públicos, para todas as idades.

CIRCUITO CENTRAL ELÉTRICA

A Central Tejo é um exemplar único do património histórico, industrial e arquitetónico da primeira metade do século XX. Classificado como imóvel de interesse público, encontra-se hoje totalmente conservado, incluindo a sua maquinaria original.

Integrada no MAAT – Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia, a Central Tejo continua a contar história da eletricidade, evocando o funcionamento e o ambiente de trabalho da antiga fábrica. No novo Circuito Central Elétrica confluem a memória tecnológica e as energias do futuro. Através do maior acervo nacional sobre a história da eletricidade em Portugal e de um conjunto de propostas expositivas que percorrem a evolução da eletricidade até às energias renováveis, disponibilizam-se ao público conhecimentos fascinantes sobre este tema.
