  • Anotaciones
  • The Zenith Royal 1000-1 is a AC Adapter/Battery operated, portable 9 transistor BC and SW band receiver.  Has push-pull audio output stage and earphone jack that disconnects the speaker for private listening. Uses Qty(2) #123 dial lights.  Also uses Qty(8) "D" 1.5V batteries for the radio and Qty(1) "D" 1.5V battery for the dial lights. AC adapters that generated 12VDC were available for 120V and also for 115/230V. Use of the AC Adapters via the power jack bypassed the batteries for the radio, but the dial lights remained powered by the individual 1.5V battery. Note that the "-1" in the Zenith model number indicated that the radio had an external power jack.

Band Frequency Ranges are as follows:
    Broadcast Band.........................540 - 1600kHz
    SW Band #1..............................2 - 4MHz
    SW Band #2..............................4 - 9MHz

    SW Band #3..............................9.4 - 10.1MHz (31M)
    SW Band #4.............................11.4 - 12.3MHz (25M)
    SW Band #5.............................14.7 - 15.8MHz (19M)
    SW Band #6.............................17.1 - 18.5MHz (16M)
    SW Band #7.............................20.7 - 22.4MHz (13M)

See different chassis variants of the Zenith Transistorized Shortwave Portable Radio series Royal 1000 like the 9AT40, the 9CT..., the 9HT ... and the Trans-Oceanic Royal 1000D and the Trans-Oceanic Royal 1000-1 Ch= 9HT40Z8 which was the last model of the series 1000. There is an ad in "The National Geographic Magazine" 1957, December and we beleive the first Trans-Oceanic 1000 was introduced in November 1957.

The end-date of 1000-1 we have put to 1968 because of Phil McArthur wrote at ARC: "In July 1958, the $275 1000-D, which added the longwave band, appeared. Both models used nine D cells in the battery pack. In 1964, the $199.95 1000-1 model added an AC power adapter. (The price was reduced in 1962 due to the introduction of the $275 Royal 3000, which had FM.) The Royal 1000 stayed in the Zenith product lineup through 1968, an 11-year run."

It seems to be a fact that in 1964 Zenith lowered the price, but we have not yet proofs for later dates. The "H" in the chassis number indicates only 1961/1962 and can well be starting early 1962 - or late 1961. We should find more chassis numbers and serial numbers of existing sets (please ad photos) and we should find the latest ads. All this can be put into a sticky forum article.

Dear Forum members,

recently I helped a friend repair one of these receivers, with chassis 9HT40Z8. The problem was due to incorrect biassing of the output transistors, but the circuit of the audio stages bore little resemblance to the circuit diagram available here; in fact, it was much closer to the circuit for the model 3000 here - the most notable difference being the bias resistor was 27Ω rather than 36Ω. In the faulty example repaired, this resistor had increased to nearly 150Ω leading to excessive dissipation on the output stage.

Can any Zenith aficionados advise, please?

With best regards,

Mike.
