The type U pliotron was the first of the 50 watt transmitting tubes made by GE. Work was started on developing this tube in 1917 and production started around November of 1918. Initial production was at the research laboratory at Schenectady in New York but was later transferred to the lamp factories of GE (Cleveland Ohio and Harrison, New Jersey). The original tubes were fitted with a larger base than the normal smaller UV base and this was originally made by the Shaw Insulator company for GE. Later tubes (1919-1920) had bases made by GE themselves. These bases have a mica disc as insulation. The US Navy version of this tube was CG1144 and the Army VT18. It was the forerunner of the UV203 tube. It is detailed on page 38 of "The Story of Electronics Development at the General Electric company".
