  • In literature we find an earlier Gilfillan table (box) model 60 from 1927, which is different from this cathedral radio. In this case here the chassis was built in the Gilfillan plant on the Jackson-Bell assembly line. The case was made by Elmer Zwiebel, who held the patent for the design. He was one of the brothers of Herb Bell but obviously ran his own enterprise. All other brothers and the father did directly work for Jackson Bell. Same is valid for the Jackson-Bell model 60, which is known in the "sunburst" version. Here we have a Cathedral version - which is similar to the Jackson-Bell 60 cathedral version, but without any indication of Gilfillan or Jackson-Bell. As one can see on the picture with knob and escutcheon detail, the pictures of this model here do not indicate Jackson Bell: no type plate at the lower front (just above the base), not even a trace of nailholes.

    The cabinet is according to the US design patent 82,773, held by Elmer Zwiebel.
    Our set here may have been an employees acquisition. They were allowed to buy for $29.- wich is about half of the retail price.
