Hello Spiros,
Have a look at this website for details of Sid Chaplin who can supply what you are looking for. I have purchased from him in the past and he is very reliable.
Regards, William.

Antique Radio speaker Cloth

Hi,

Eight years ago I visited a small bespoke weaving mill in Finland.

In discussion I learned that they have in the past made reproduction antique/vintage automobile upholstery cloth on a few occasions.  They examine and deconstruct a sample of cloth, using an unworn piece taken from an unexposed location inside a seat, headliner or door-panel.  They then select the thread, prepare the warp, weaving draft and weft fibers and proceed to weave some quantity of the material for the niche market.

I have occasionally wondered if they would be able to economically reproduce some rare or sought after speaker grille cloth that would suit as many customers as possible.

I have just now sent them an initial query to see if they are able and if it is economically viable to make a run.  While their web site is still active I do not know if they still offer bespoke weaving.

If you have a opinion on what would be a popular cloth that is not available from other sources it might be possible to justify a production run.  Perhaps even in cooperation with one/more/all of the other retailers of speaker cloth who could then purchase their share of the production run cloth and sell it retail as they generally do, any individuals who order in advance should get the same wholesale price I suppose.

I will post an update here if there is any sign of interest.  If the minimum order is 100m and there are only two interested parties who want totally different cloth then there is no future in the project but if there is a style of cloth not yet available on the market that would suit many radio/TV/tape/gramophone/speaker restorers then it might be worth pursuing this.

If this progresses further donations of cloth samples to determine the original characteristics would be needed and wolcome.  I do not have a collection of my own to draw on though I could find some radios at thrift shops though spenfing EUR50-200 for a ornamental radio to just remove some cloth does not seen rational.

Regards

Kalle
