When I first played this radio after the chassis restoration, there was a horrible bass rattle in the oval speaker. When I pulled it for inspection I found all the foam gasket had deteriorated along with the voice coil dust cover.
I removed the remaining foam and gently blew out the voice coil. Then connected the speaker to an audio generator to vibrate any foam residue from the air gap for about 30 minutes. I found about 74 hz to resonate the cone vigorously.
The foam rubber gasket and voice coil dust cover has rotted and turned to dust. It can be replaced easily. Tea Bag paper is strong and porous. Cut a circle the size of a Nickel ($0.05), run a small bead of glue around the voice coil and set the paper in place.
The oval surround gasket that seals the speaker frame to the baffle board is replaceable with self adhesive Window insulation. It is just the correct width and depth to make a good seal with out interfering with the cone suspension folds.
This is an easy fix to a horrible sounding problem. I wish you good luck and good restorations.
Paul.
