        PLEASE, can anyone tell me when and by whom the high voltage

        rectifier diode BY100 was introduced in the markey for the first time?

        Reference to the source of such information will be highly apprreciated.

Dear Walter,

I checked my collection year-books:

The BY-100 is first mentioned in the Philips Pocketbook for Hams, printed in 1962.

It is named  "Rectifier for T.V."

The BY-100 is not mentioned in the Philips and the Siemens pocketbook 1960, nore in the Pope pocketbook 1961.

Reasently I was reading old Sweadis Radio och Television (Radion and TV) magazines. In the magzine Nr6 (=June) -1961 there is a full A4 page add from Philips (Sweden) "Philips dubbeldifunderade kiseldiod BY100 tål 1250 volt överspänning". On the page there are BY100 pictures and shot form Techical data too.

Obviosly Philips was the first or one of the earliers, who introduced this Si diode to the markets.

When browsing through some service manuals for Philips television chassis, i find the following dates for first usage of various diode types (note that the dates are issue dates for the service manuals and not date for production start of the respective chassis):

OA210 (apparently with low rated voltage as it was necessary to connect two such diodes in series): chassis E1-A, may 1959 and E2-A, undated service manual.

OA214 (single): chassis E2-B, september 1959

OY241 (single): chassis E3-A, august 1960

BY100 (single): chassis P1-A, january 1963

BY250 (single): chassis S11S-A, december 1963

I was a young production engineer in the Philips Hendon Works, South Australia, semiconductor factory in the early 1960s.

We made the OA210 for a couple of years from 1962. The OA210 was an alloy junction diode in which an anodized aluminium wire was alloyed into the surface of an N-type silicon crystal.

The BY100 replaced it in about 1964 and used a diffused silicon crystal allowing soldered connections to both sides.

Australia would have followed a year or two after the introduction of the BY100 into production in Europe.
