Hello All:

I am new to this community but I am a great fan of vintage Grundig consoles from the '50's and '60's.  I currently have two beautiful specimens (SO162US and KS490WE) and am considering a third (SO190US).  I am not a skilled technician but have found a wonderful old retired technician who will update them for me.  The SO162US plays and sounds pretty good but I am looking for a part or a part template for my KS490WE.  When the FM band button is depressed on the receiver it rotates a little metal cam which engages the FM clutch* to the tuning flywheel.  On my KS490 that little cam has disintegrated.  It needs to be replaced or, if some one has a manufacturing drawing, I could make one or have one made.  I suspect that this part is very similar across all Grunding receiver chassis and may have to by a junk one to scrap.  Anyone have any leads or other thoughts?

*And disengages the LW/SW1/SW2/BC clutch.

Hi Laurence,

Welcome to RMorg!

If you can find a piece of rubber square (the type they sell for opening jars) you can cut the piece to measurement, place a slit, and then place it over the disintegrated clutch with contact cement.

Hi Omer::

Thanx for responding.  I already tried something very similar.  The metal was simply too degraded.  If I can't find a part, which seems likely, I will try to build one.  As a stopgap, I have attached some fishing line to the clutch and I tug on it whenever I want to tune an FM station.  Not a very elegant solution but it works. :-)

Wait a second, you are talking about the pot metel device that engages FM.  If this is what you are talking about, Ross Hochstrasser has some of these.

Since he is a member this group, you can contact him direct.

That sounds exactly like what I am talking about.  Attached is a photo I took when I first opened it up.  Can you see the faint yellow arrows?  You can see that the metal has crumbled where close to the set screw.  It was so crumbled that it didn't rotate with the main shaft.  The other yellow arrow points to what I am calling the cam.  It crumbled away shortly after I took this photo. Omer:

Thanx for the tip.  I contacted Ross and it looks like it will work out.  I tried to email a thanks off-board but your server rejected me :-(

He said he was going to take a look around and contact me next week.  I have another possible source as well.  A friend in St. Louis who is also into Grundig's and is restoring an SO162.  He's pretty sure he has a junk chassis with the part I am looking for.  My internet has been going in and out all day.  I'm going to get a new cable modem in the morning.

Dear Sirs,

please avoid TALKING (e.g. about your grocery list and minor IT problems) in official boards like this and others. But even the board TALK is not provided to replace eMail in general.

Thank you very much in advance for your understanding.

Kind Regards
Georg

Is there a possibilty  that this problem could be solved with a little JB Weld epoxy at the pointed area in the posted JPEG of the clutch?

That is alsmost exactly what I tried but it didn't hold.  I have since taken the receiver to a technician to troubleshoot other problems.  If I am unsucessful in finding a replacement part I have formulated a plan for building a replacement part.  I'll be sure to let you know which way I go and why when we get to that point.

If Ross does not have the part, and you can't find it from another spare chassis, Jeffrey Angus could make the part (also a member of RMorg).
