The only way this model could be considered `transportable` is the fact that it has a handle on the top.

It does have the required 5 valves however, although not as designated for the AC/DC version, and is AC mains powered only; there doesn`t appear to be any facilities for battery power.  The unit may have been modified, or it is a mains-only version from origin.

Three of the five valves are: UR1C PEN3520 & HLDD1320.

Perhaps this is another model version, or a highly modified version of the AC/DC model: there is evidence of some recent re-wiring.

Hello Graham,

The set you have there is definitely an AC/DC mains set as I can see its dropper mounted on the chassis and no mains transformer is evident. The Wireless Retailer and Broadcaster magazine did an article on an AC/DC Regentone Transportable 5 valve superhet on the 27th November 1937. The image in there of the set is similar (but not identical) to yours, the chassis layout is identical but it has a different complement of valves ...

The existing Regentone Transportable model page was set up from information in Jonathan Hill's Radio! Radio! book in which I assume it was described as an AC mains superhet. That may well be incorrect as apart from Radio! Radio! the only documentation I can find for a Regentone Transportable is that from the Broadcaster which seems more in line with your example.

Regards ............ Howard

Hello There Howard & Thanks for your response,

I was beginning to think that few people if any, ever respond to requests for information on photo`s of unknown models ; there appear to be hundreds of requests, including a few from me, that never get any replies or suggestions on what the topic radio may be.

I read the Broadcaster article, and can see both the similarities and differences in the two models; perhaps mine is a `B` version, or one manufactured under licence or at a different location, or even a locally refurbished example using alternative valves.

Now I don`t know whether or not to upload a photo` of my model under the `Portable` nomenclature, or to add a new model. I had the same with a KB radio that was almost a new model, and yet also an existing model with different valves. I guess that some of these radios were both manufactured without strict component guidlelines, and are old enough to have been modified by repairers and/or amateur enthusiasts.

I seem to have collected a number of `odd-ball` radios over the years, and have only recently got around to looking at what I have - look out for a "PAM" FM radio that I think is UK manufactured(and works really well), but for which I can find no infornation, and a Westminster, for which there are no photo`s, but I think may be a ZA 818 - I may be able to tell when I have cleaned it up.

Thanks again,

graham
