stromberg: Stromberg-Carlson models 1101

Under the designation 1101, Stromberg-Carlson produced different series of table top radios for broadcast only. This started after the WW2, most probably for the Autumn sales 1945. They are for 117 volts AC/DC which also means for AC 25 cycles to 60 cycles (no power transformer). Voltage rating is 105 - 125 volts. Internal loop antenna with electrostatic shield. Tuning range 540 kc to 1600 kc. Power rating 50 watts. Speaker voice coil impedance at 400 cycles is 3.5 ohms, speaker field coil resistance 425 ohms, power output 0.65 watts.

You find the schematics at M.N. Beitman "Most-Often-Needed" 1947 Radio Diagrams and Servicing Information volume 7 on pages 154/155 as Receiver No. 1101 Series nos. 10-11. When reading closely that means: There is a series 10 with an Electro Magnet Speaker (part no. 155001). Production change to series 11 was for a Permanent Magnet Speaker (part no. 155013 and trafo 155020). Note separate mounting of output transformer and addition of choke in place of field coil. Both series have 12SK7 as RF amp, 12SA7 as converter, 12SK7 as IF amp, 12SQ7 as det., AVC and 1st AF amp, 35L6GT as output tube and 35Z5GT as power rectifier. The models have 7 tuned circuits, IF is 455 kc.

John F. Rider Volume XV (15) of 1946 "Perpetual Trouble Shooter's Manual" (often referred to as "Riders") shows on page Stromberg Carlson Co. 15-9, 15-10 and 15-11 models 1101-HB (Knob 134004), 1101-HI (Knob 134005), 1101-HM (Knob 134003), 1101-HW (Knob 134001) and 1101-HY (Knob 134002) for the same schematic.

The main differences for the suffix (series 10, series 11:
HB: Brown bakelite, chassis 112002, cabinet 108031
HI:  Ivory bakelite, chassis 112002, cabinet 108032
HM: Mahagony, chassis 112003, cabinet 108011
HW: Walnut, chassis 112001, cabinet 108001
HY: Bleached, chassis 112001, cabinet 108002

Other differences noted: 138008 Dial Lens HB and HI but dial HM (no. 12203) is different from the others (122011). The same for the pointer. Same tubes as for Beitman. The electrostatic shield and back is number 151013 for HB and HI but 151014 for HM, HW and HY.

Howard W. SAMS & Co. Inc. "PhotoFact Folder" shows in July 1946 folder 462-9 - in other words in their second volume, folder 9 a picture of the model 1101-HW. They cover also series nos. 10-11 - which indicates not a series 10-11 but a series 10 and a series 11 - difference is mainly the loudspeaker. The 4 pages show also the two chassis sides "top" and "bottom". Same tube line up as Rider's and Beitman.

I have also a SAMS set/volume 41, folder 23 from May 1948 (see the "SchematicFinder") for such a model, but will have to fetch it before digging. I would like to find out why we show also a tube line up with 6SK7, 6SA7, 66SK7, 6SQ7, 6K6 and 6X5 for an AC version with Electro Magnetic Dynamic speaker and power output 2 watts. When I have all facts available I will change the models and add a link to this.

There is at least also a series 13E, Mark Skala showed to me - with an output transformer 155020 and loudspeaker assembly 155013 - the same as for series 11. Tubes also 12SK7 etc. This indicates that there are even more series around ...
