any suggestions to repair a weak left channel?

On radio or disc or both?

First make sure it's not the speakers by swapping them.
Check level feeding the volume control and ensure both channels are the same. Then with a scope or DVM on AC gradually work towards the speakers. A signal generator at a low level and about 800 Hz instead of the pickup cartridge is a good source, short left and right inputs together. But you could use the radio. If it's stereo and mono, put it to mono.
