Descrizione

THE ARTISTIC PROJECT

Les Machines de l’île is an unprecedented artistic project. Born from the imaginations of François Delarozière and Pierre Orefice, it is a blend of the invented worlds of Jules Verne, the mechanical universe of Leonardo da Vinci, and the industrial history of Nantes, on the exceptional site of the former shipyards.
Some strange machines came to populate the Isle of Nantes. After the Great Elephant, this is now the turn of a Manta Ray, a Sea Snake and of all kinds of incredible boats to take possession of the banks of the Loire River. These uncommon machines were born from the hands of the constructors of the company La Machine and came to life in between those of the Machines of the Isle, in the public eye. Their backwards and forwards between the building workshop and the Gallery give impetus to the movement at the heart of the former Dubigeon naves. They convey a mysterious reality to this island just like the time when vessels were launched there for all the trips of the world.

A story told by the machinists
The machinists who are working to place the Machines in motion and bring them to life explain how the mechanisms work and how they were developed. During the tour / performance the Machines periodically awaken, suddenly turning into animals or monsters.

THE GREAT ELEPHANT

He lives in the central street of the Nefs. When the majestic animal goes out for its walk, it is like architecture in motion departing a steel cathedral. The 50 passengers on board embark on an amazing journey on the Ile de Nantes. Each time the pachyderm goes out, it is a unique spectacle for everyone to enjoy.

From the inside, the passengers will be able to see the moving gears that power the legs. The machinist tells stories about the elephant and makes it trumpet. On the back of the Elephant, it’s like being on the 4th floor of a moving house, with a breathtaking view over the site of the former shipyards. In this time-travelling carriage, the passengers can voyage to the imaginary world of Jules Verne in the city where he was born.

THE MACHINE GALLERY

The Gallery is a living space where new machines are exhibited after they are created in the workshop of the company La Machine. While the elements of the Marine Worlds have joined the Carousel, a totally different universe has been set in the Gallery… one of plants and the Heron Tree.

The European Flight Test Centre
This wind tunnel flight simulator used to test all the amazing flying machines is unique in the world. A machinist takes the control of a “flying flea”, put on its seat belt, helmet and goggles, and flies at speeds of more than 100 km/h.

THE MARINE WORLDS CAROUSEL

Located on the banks of the Loire river, opposite the Jules Verne Museum, the Marine Worlds Carousel seems to come out of the isle of Nantes’s belly at the most maritime place of the city.

This giant carousel, almost 25m high and 22m of diameter, is an incredible machinery that reawakens fairground art. An authentic 360-degree theatre, it meets the public in an incredible sculpture dedicated to the sea. The visitors are the spectators of strange and disturbing marine creatures turning in a huge mechanical aquarium mounted on 3 levels. They discover the sea in all its forms, from the seabeds, the depths, and up to the surface of the oceans.

THE WORKSHOP OF THE COMPANY LA MACHINE

Cross the street of the Nefs and head over to the workshop terraces via the great staircase.

THE PROTOTYPE BRANCH OF THE HERON TREE

It’s a preview of the major project of the Machines de l’île : the Heron tree
