The "Abbiphone" Super-4 was a battery-operated broadcast receiver manufactured by Abbey Industries Limited at Abbey Wood Works. Introduced in early 1924 and advertised in The Radio Times (March 21, 1924, p. 518), it was designed for long-range loudspeaker reception of BBC, Continental, and trans-Atlantic American stations.
The receiver utilised a 4-valve circuit topology (typically 1 H.F., Detector, and 2 L.F. audio stages) with top-mounted valve sockets and panel-mounted plug-in coil holders for waveband switching and reaction adjustments.
Abbey Industries offered the set as a standalone tabletop unit (21 Guineas receiver only; £31 19s 6d complete with accessories) or housed in premium floor-standing furniture cabinets 2 ft high Jacobean style at 38 Guineas, or Sheraton style at 41 Guineas). All versions were subject to the mandatory 25/- B.B.C. stamp tax.
