The Chapman 1166 was an FM stereo multiplex decoder that first reconstructed the missing 38 kHz subcarrier using the 19 kHz pilot tone to extract the separate L-R stereo data from the tuner's baseband output. It completed the process by matrixing this L-R signal with the original L+R mono signal to deliver the distinct Left and Right audio streams.
