Solid State Telecine System

A simple, solid-state telecine system has been announced by Rank Cintel Ltd.

Film images are converted to a video signal on the ADS 1 by a beam splitter block and a series of four linear arrays (one for each colour and one as an infrared sensor); each has 1024 charge-coupled devices (CCDs), and digital scanning and processing techniques.
Three film transports can be used with one electronics control cabinet; switching is instant between 16-mm and 35-mm gauges. A vertical spooling configuration with a 21” spool capacity minimizes floor-space requirements. Dirt can fall clear because the film runs vertically through the scanning block. An optional dirt and scratch concealment system exploits the infrared sensitivity of the CCD by using a dedicated sensor to detect blemishes which are then concealed by advanced frame-store manipulation.

Although designed primarily to reproduce positive film stock, the equipment has a gentle capstan drive said to allow negative stock to be run. Features include variable speed, automatic colour correction, waveform and picture monitors, and a synchronizer for A/B film applications.

Normal and wide-screen formats can be accommodated. The equipment can be used with PAL, NTSC, and SECAM television systems.
