  • Official GPO Registration No. 249 crystal receiver approved by the Postmaster-General (P.M.G.) and the B.B.C., manufactured by City Battery & Wireless Co. starting in winter 1922.

The receiver features a finely wound inductance tube with 20 tappings, a "Detector De Luxe" with micrometer screw adjustment, and twin crystals (an open galena/cat's whisker detector combined with a Perikon detector) mounted on a superfine ebonite panel. All internal connections are fully soldered and insulated. The unit is housed in a compact mahogany cabinet with a side headphone terminal receptacle and an instruction card affixed inside the lid.

    Lineage & Variant Note:
As documented in Radio Radio (Jonathan Hill, p. 68, fig. 75), sets bearing GPO Reg. No. 249 originated with City Battery & Wireless Co. in late 1922 equipped with both cat's whisker and Perikon detectors. The model was also marketed and distributed extensively through London selling agents Fowler & Brigden, whose advertised versions often featured the Perikon detector configuration.

Dimensions with side compartment. Also a shorter version without side compartment.
